Why do people continue to justify U.S. colonialism in Puerto Rico if 99% opposed it in 1998?

There is no "colonial status quo" since Peurto Rico is not a colony. The link you give is to an extremely biased site. Most Peurto Ricans vote consistently for the status quo with most of the rest wanting statehood. Only a very small % want independence.
