Question about taking photos at night with Nikon or other brand Digital SLR camera?

How do you take a pic of the moon and stars. I know I need a tripod but what settings do I use for shutter speed and aperture(I ume that would be the F Stop). I tried on auto and of course the moon was one big bright light with no definition. How would I do it?
